iNaturalist : social media for plant/animal nerds

Have you ever seen a plant (or animal) and wondered what it was?  iNaturalist may be the tool for you.

Crazy simple to use:

  • take a pic of the mystery with your Smartphone (Android or Apple)
  • upload the photo to iNaturalist
  • like magic, the image is identified
The image at the top of this post is Witchhazel.  I discovered it this year and couldn't identify it using the standard tricks (ask my wife, Google and the book Native Trees of Canada)

I followed the steps above and had an answer within 30 minutes.

And it tells me all kinds of things about Witchhazel (or any other plants and animals) such as :

  • an interactive map of where it's located in North America
  • lots of photos
  • lengthy description plus uses and references
  • taxonomy
  • conservation status
  • similar species
This just scratches the surface of what you can do.  A very helpful network, this is a game changer resource.

Check it out at inaturalist.ca

A big shout out to Tarissa Holmes at MTRI for making me aware of iNaturalist!
